Meet Your Doula

Hello, I’m Sara Kalish - founder of Graceful Arrival, mother of two, and a doula who sees this work as more than a profession. To me, being a doula is truly a calling. It’s about honoring the strength within each birthing person, supporting families through one of life’s most powerful transitions, and making sure every parent feels they have a steady hand and compassionate heart beside them.
My path to becoming a doula began with the births of my own children. After facing fertility challenges and a difficult pregnancy with my daughter, I was unprepared for the long labor that followed. Preeclampsia complicated both of my births, and while I felt more ready with my son, each experience left me humbled and determined. These experiences showed me how overwhelming birth can feel without the right education and support, and how deeply important it is to change that for other families.
Those early postpartum days were equally transformative. Nursing didn’t come easily, and I often felt unsure and overwhelmed. With the guidance of a lactation specialist, I was able to find my rhythm, eventually nursing both of my children with deep gratitude for the person who helped me through that stressful time. The experience taught me firsthand just how valuable good support is in those tender early weeks - and it inspires me to walk alongside new parents with empathy and encouragement as they discover what works best for their families.
Before becoming a doula, I taught preschool and kindergarten, an experience that shaped my belief in patience, empathy, and honoring each child and family as unique. Later, as a yoga teacher, I deepened my understanding of the mind-body connection and learned tools that bring calm, breath, and grounding even in the most intense moments of labor.
My philosophy of care is simple: every family deserves a birth experience that feels informed, supported, and empowered. Whether you’re planning a home birth, working with a midwife, or navigating a hospital setting, I hold space for your story, offer evidence-based resources, and ensure you feel seen and heard throughout your journey.
When working with clients, I focus on emotional support and advocacy, helping you navigate choices in medical settings with confidence. I bring comfort measures such as massage, positioning, and breathwork, while also offering postpartum care to ease the transition into life with a newborn. My goal is always to help families feel nurtured, grounded, and confident as they welcome their baby earthside.
Outside of my work as a doula, I’m an avid reader of everything from fiction to non‑fiction to personal development books, always seeking opportunities for growth and reflection. I also love quilting and crafting, creative practices that remind me of the beauty in tradition, detail, and care. Most of all, I treasure time with my children, whether curled up with books, attending their sporting events, or savoring the little adventures of everyday life.
