FAQ
Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum come with a lot of questions and choosing your support team can bring up a few more. Here are answers to the questions I hear most often.

Working With a Doula
What exactly does a doula do?+
A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period. I’m here to help you understand your options, prepare for birth, practice comfort measures, navigate decisions, and feel supported throughout the process.
My role is non-medical, which means I don’t replace your doctor, midwife, or nurse. Instead, I’m an additional member of your support team focused on you and your experience.
Do I still need a doula if I have a supportive partner?+
Absolutely! A doula doesn’t replace your partner—I support both of you.
Your partner knows you in a way I never could, while I bring experience with birth, comfort measures, positioning, breathing techniques, and the birth environment. Together, we make a pretty great team.
Will you advocate for me during labor?+
I’ll help you understand your options, ask questions, and find your voice so you can advocate for yourself.
I won’t make medical decisions or speak over you or your care team. My goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and supported as you make decisions about your care.
Insurance & Payment
Do you accept insurance?+
Yes! Graceful Arrival works with select insurance plans and programs that provide doula benefits.
Coverage varies based on your individual plan, eligibility, authorization, and the services your plan includes. We can help determine what doula benefits may be available to you before getting started.
Which insurance plans do you work with?+
I currently work with Kaiser and Medi-Cal clients who have eligible doula benefits. The number and type of services covered can vary based on your specific plan.
If you have another insurance provider, please reach out so we can discuss your coverage and what options may be available.
How do I find out if my insurance covers doula services?+
After your consultation, you may be asked to complete an insurance verification form. Your information will then be reviewed to determine your eligibility and which doula services may be covered under your specific plan.
Because every insurance plan is different, it’s important to verify your individual benefits rather than assuming your coverage will be the same as someone else’s.
Do you accept payment plans?+
In some cases, payment plans may be available. Please reach out so we can discuss your needs and determine an arrangement that works for both of us.
Preparing for Birth
Can you help me create a birth plan?+
Yes! Birth planning is an important part of our prenatal work together.
We’ll talk through your options, preferences, priorities, and the “what ifs” so you feel prepared for the decisions you may face during labor.
A birth plan isn’t about controlling birth—it’s about understanding your options before you’re in the middle of it.
Will you support me if I choose an epidural or other pain medication?+
100%.
There is no “right” way to give birth and no gold star for doing it without pain medication. Whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, want an epidural or nitrous oxide, or change your mind during labor, I’m there to support you.
Your birth. Your choices.
What if I change my mind about my birth preferences during labor?+
Then we change the plan.
Birth is unpredictable, and changing your mind is not failing. My job isn’t to make sure you stick to a particular type of birth—it’s to make sure you feel supported and informed as your birth unfolds.
We pivot together.
Birth Support
What is included in your birth doula support?+
Our work begins before labor. Prenatal visits give us time to discuss your birth preferences, practice labor positions and comfort measures, explore breathing and mindfulness techniques, prepare your partner, and talk about what to expect.
When labor begins, we’ll stay in communication and decide together when it makes sense for me to join you. I provide continuous in-person support during active labor and immediate postpartum support after your baby arrives.
What happens if I need a C-section?+
I’m still your doula.
If your birth shifts to a C-section, my role may change depending on hospital policies, but my support doesn’t disappear. I can continue supporting you and your partner before and after your baby is born.
What happens if you are unavailable when I go into labor?+
Birth is unpredictable, which is why having reliable backup support is important.
In the rare event that I’m unable to attend your birth, a qualified backup doula can step in so you’re not left without support. We’ll discuss backup arrangements before your due date so you know what to expect.
Postpartum Support
What kind of postpartum support do you offer?+
Postpartum support looks different for every family. Visits may include processing your birth experience, feeding support, newborn care education, recovery support, help adjusting to life with a new baby, answering questions, connecting you with additional resources, or simply providing a safe place to talk about how things are going.
You don’t have to have everything figured out just because your baby is here.
Do you offer overnight postpartum care?+
Yes! I offer overnight postpartum support to help your family rest while knowing your baby is being cared for with calm, attentive support.
Overnight postpartum care may include newborn care, feeding support, soothing, diaper changes, and bringing your baby to you for feeding when needed. These visits may also be covered by insurance, depending on your individual plan, eligibility, and available doula benefits.
Is postpartum support only for families who hired you for birth?+
Not necessarily. Depending on my availability and your needs, postpartum support may be available even if I wasn’t your birth doula.
Please reach out so we can talk about the kind of support you’re looking for and whether private-pay or insurance-covered postpartum services may be available.
Getting Started
When should I hire a doula?+
There really isn’t a “perfect” time. Many families reach out during their second trimester, which gives us plenty of time to get to know each other and prepare together.
If you’re further along, please still reach out. If I have availability around your due date, we can absolutely talk about working together.
How do I get started?+
The first step is simply getting to know each other.
Schedule a consultation call so we can talk about your pregnancy, what you’re hoping for from your birth experience, the kind of support you’re looking for, and any questions you have about services or insurance.
What happens after the consultation call?+
If we decide we’re a good fit, I’ll send you the next steps, including your service agreement and any forms needed to verify your insurance benefits.
Once everything is completed, we’ll begin scheduling your visits and creating a support plan based on your pregnancy, preferences, and individual needs. There’s no expectation that you have everything figured out before we talk—that’s what the conversation is for.
